Why is it a good idea to work in video games?
The video game business environment is expanding and, with it, the demand for employment and the diversity of professional profiles sought by studios. This is a virtuous traction in all directions: the arrival and creation of companies improves salaries and working conditions while at the same time raising the industry’s profile. The sector has a large number of independent studios and large publishers established in our country, making Spain one of the countries with the greatest business projection in Europe in the ecosystem.
These movements project a future in which everyone wants to be in a strategic sector, even educational centres that specialise in training their new workers. In recent years, different companies have chosen Spain to expand, opening offices in different cities, mainly Barcelona. In the last year, more than 1,500 job offers have been published in the gaming and cybersecurity sector, representing a 30% growth in vacancies. The star profile in this industry: programmer.
Among the shadows of video games in terms of employment, specialists point to the opacity of salaries, the instability of some contracts and the gender gap, which remains in the management and technological areas of companies, as major generators of inequality within the industry.
How do you charge in the sector?
Some 31,300 euros on average, according to the studies. This is 7,000 euros above the national average salary and slightly below the average in technology and ICT.
The Spanish video game industry is aware of its potential and its areas for improvement, it is evolving rapidly and is asking for a clue to carve out a niche for itself among the country’s major audiovisual sectors. It has everything it needs to be on the podium of cultural industries in the coming years. And it is possible that the sector still lacks maturity, but this is probably because it is brimming with youth.
